Dr Babajide Milton Macaulay is a native of Lagos State, Nigeria and a 150 Fellow of the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) in the UK. He holds a B.Tech. degree with First-class (Hons.) in Biology from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Nigeria in 2010, and went on to win the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship twice! The awards enabled him to acquire his M.Sc. degree (with Distinction) in Sustainable Environmental Management at the Natural Resources Institute (NRI), University of Greenwich (UoG), the UK in 2013, and a PhD degree in Environmental Geochemistry and Geomicrobiology from the University of Manchester (UoM), the UK in 2019. He is currently a Lecturer, specialising in Ecotoxicology/Environmental Management in the Environmental Biology and Public Health Unit in the Department of Biology, FUTA. In September 2019, he was appointed as the Secretary of the Academic Board of the Department.
Dr Macaulay is an astute academic with a penchant for excellence. This he clearly demonstrated by earning himself the pioneer recipient award for the Best MSc Thesis on the Sustainable Environmental Management programme at the NRI, UoG, UK, for the 2012-2013 session. The award-winning MSc Thesis reviewed the challenges of cleaning-up crude oil spills using bioremediation strategies; here, he proposed a hypothetical bioslurping-biosparging technology for a synergistic, cost-effective clean-up of contaminated land subsurface, which he has since published in a peer-reviewed international journal, Annals of Environmental Science. He was also a three-time Judge (from 2013 to 2015) for The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition organised by the RCS, and once worked as a General Marker for Pearson UK, a global educational company, in 2017.
From 2015-2019, through his PhD research focused on understanding the factors driving arsenic release in drinking aquifers, he developed novel in-situ deployment techniques for on-field groundwater arsenic studies which became fundamentally useful for the execution of a UK-funded arsenic project in Cambodia, worth about £600,000. A public communication of this novel technique earned him the “Best Poster Presentation Award” at the Annual Postgraduate Research Conference of the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, UoM, UK, in December 2018.
Since 2012, Dr Macaulay has personally guided/counselled more than 500 students, graduates and business professionals on the procedures of winning international scholarships, particularly in Europe and America. In 2017, he created a Facebook page, ‘The Shoulders of Giants – TSG’, where he shares scholarship opportunities and invites senior scholars for a ‘Question and Answer series’ with over 1,200 followers on the page. In January 2018, he founded, “iLLUMANIA”, an online educational, business and environmental consulting platform which provides services such as dissertation/thesis/essay coursework writing guidance, scholarship application mastery, CV restructuring, personal statement review, career counselling, data analysis, research/business proposal writing and environmental impact assessment (EIA) at affordable consultation fees. iLLUMANIA currently boasts of 30 consultants with over 200 clients in just 2 years. Interestingly, in the first 2 years of its establishment (2018 and 2019), iLLUMANIA has produced 55 international scholarship winners from 75 clients (a success rate of 73%) attracting over $500,000 in scholarship benefits.
In April 2018, Dr. Macaulay also created another Facebook page, ‘Just Like You’, to help showcase the behind-the-scene stories of Africans under 40 who rose from the abyss of nothingness to enviable heights in their careers or businesses. Just Like You currently boasts of 4 media staff volunteers and 9 four-minute inspirational videos released for public consumption. The page presently has over 2,000 followers.
In September 2019, he was invited by the British Council Nigeria to a two-man panel for a UK Scholarship Orientation Session, a segment under the 2019 Study UK Fair held in Lagos, Nigeria. He joined in counselling over 600 guests who attended the event and received an official appreciation message from the British Council Nigeria for a job well done.
In October 2019, he launched the International Scholarship Mastery Bootcamp (ISMB) as a social responsibility programme under iLLUMANIA, to train undergraduate students, graduates, academic staff members and business professionals on the rudiments of securing international postgraduate scholarships abroad. In the last Quarter of 2019, 180 students from two Federal universities in Southwestern Nigeria were trained, and as at January 2020, 14 universities in 5 geopolitical zones in Nigeria had signed up to host the event. Through the ISMB, he is looking forward to training 10,000 protégés in 5 years (2020-2025), attracting up to $70 Million in scholarship benefits by 2025 (using iLLUMANIA’s scholarship success rate of 73% as projected baseline).
